In pre-colonial times, Vigan City was a significant trading post for Chinese junks, buying and selling gold beeswax along with other items from the main Cordilleras for unique Asian products. Numerous Chinese merchants settled within the mestizo area, getting married to local people as well as beginning fresh bloodlines.
Vigan City was taken and settled by the Spanish in 1572, and started to be a centre of Spanish political and religious power in northern Luzon.
